not to gloat, but
when we bought our hybrid Honda Insight in 2000, lots of people told us it wouldn't be worth it - we wouldn't save enough gas to make up the expense of buying it (though, really, it wasn't much more than a "comparable" nonhybrid, whatever that is.)

We didn't argue. We figured driving clean was worth spending more. We wanted to help foster the improving technology. Plus, surprisingly few terrorist organizations are funded by Japanese automotive engineers.

Of course, gas prices have more than doubled since our initial "starry-eyed idealist" decision. Am I ever tempted to gloat? Oh, no. Not me.

My mom just bought a Prius! She calls it the Car of the Future and actually corrects me when I call it "the Prius". It's adorable. I'd have one if I could afford it (but my Honda Civic already gets 37 mpg on the highway).

Gloat for you

Newspaper headlines like this one will gloat for you.

I didn't buy a hybrid (despite agreeing with you at the time that it is worth paying extra to support the technology and for the moral benefits) because I'm still driving the first car I ever brought. When I was commuting by car most of the time, I got around 30-32 miles to the gallon, which is enough that I'm proud of it. Now that the car is mostly used for kid-shuttling, the gas millage is lower.

I always forget that you guys live in a state that is, in many ways, in a different universe...

Same universe; different century. Out here, we party like it's 1999, at most.

We recently got a (used) Prius, and I'll have to say the ability to be smug (not that we'd ever actually be smug about it, but we could) is a great fringe benefit to the car choice. That, and the lack of sticker-shock at the gas station.

You're giving me a great mental image of a rogue Japanese auto engineer terror cell, which would probably involve lots of short men in suits & ties. (And since it's my movie, kung fu.)

Used? Somebody gave up a Prius?

(And since it's my movie, kung fu.)

Yes! See, even if they do turn out to be terrorists, they'll be much cooler terrorists!

My Taurus isn't terrible on gas mileage, but I'd love to have a hybrid. Not just for "OMGas!" reasons but just to feel better about driving a more green car.
